As discussed previously,
there are two main classes of VHF DSC equipment available for ships.
Class A equipment is designed for merchant vessels. Although there is nothing stopping you fitting a Class A VHF DSC radio to your pride and joy, all the bells and whistles required for full compliance with the international standard means that these radios aren't cheap.
Class D equipment is specifically designed for small craft. All the superfluous functions have been removed, making these radios very simple to use. Many class D radios support automated position polling.
